Vigil, Sunday night, which was the first time for choir and clergy, but we made it work! Then on a cold and blustery January 7th Monday morning, we gathered on Cherry Beach with Holy Myrrhbearer's mission for a joint blessing of Lake Ontario. We had a great group of two dozen of our parish go Caroling at L'Arche Daybreak, our community fed 50 people a delicious Christmas Dinner (special thanks to the Dumas and Pospielovsky's for cooking it) and had around 70 show up for Nativity evening liturgy. The Nativity Fast Starts Today (Nov 15th) The Journey to the Winter Pascha (the Nativity of our Lord and Theophany) starts on Nov 15th through to Dec 24th. Nativity closely parallels the Pascha season due to the key connection between the Incarnation and the Cross & Resurrection. One of the first parallels the 40 day fast starting today. Fasting is about returning to living as if God exists! Fasts in the Old Testament were always a call to for Israel to return to its Covenant with God. This had physical, spiritual and social implications. Fasting from food and espousing a nice appearance was a sign of repentance and return from pleasing ourselves. Also the people were called to intense prayer both personal and corporate. Finally, the people of Israel were called to return to their commitment of living a life where oppression and corruption were removed and the weak (the poor) were looked after. Almsgiving is much more than a few quarters on a street corner, but rather radical hospitality anywhere we see need. Isaiah 58 Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen: to loose the chains of injustice and untie the cords of the yoke, to set the oppressed free and break every yoke? Is it not to share your food with the hungry and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter-- when you see the naked, to clothe them, and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood? Then your light will break forth like the dawn, and your healing will quickly appear; then your righteousness will go before you, and the glory of the Lord will be your rear guard. Then you will call, and the Lord will answer; you will cry for help, and he will say: Here am I. As you live out this Nativity Fast, please find a a few suggestions of how to live out the fast:

Hours followed by Divine Liturgy, Agape Meal - 9:30am We are excited to have a intense first week of the Dormition Fast. The Dormition Fast can actually be thought of as the fast of the Process of Salvation, we start with the Cross, then meet at the transformation and encounter of the Transifiguration and end with the Falling Asleep of the new Eve (Theotokos). So while its about the Theotokos its more about her as the model for our lives. She heard the word of God and kept it so well, that she of all women in history was chosen not only to hear His Word but give birth to it (Him). So while we fast in contemplation of her life, we are simultaneously preparing ourselves to live a life in imitation of her

Vespers for Elevation of the Cross & Lesser Blessing of Waters - 6:30pm to 8:00pm Let us come together in prayer and contemplation, drawing the beauty of our Lord's Cross into the depths our very being. Without such contemplation, there can be no imitation of so great a love. " Come, all ye kindred of the nations, with hymns let us honor the Cross of the Lord. Rejoice, O Cross, thou perfect redemption of fallen Adam." Friday, August 2 Paraclesis to the Theotokos - 6:30pm to 7:30pm " O Theotokos, we shall not cease from speaking of all thy mighty acts, all we the unworthy ones; for if thou hadst not stood to intercede for us, who would have delivered us from such numerous dangers? Who would have preserved us all until now in true freedom? O Lady, we shall not turn away from thee; for thou dost always save thy servants from all manner of grief." Saturday, August 3 - Phase 1 of our renovations @ 12pm By God's grace, we are beginning the beautification of our parish.
